Resumen: En los últimos años, se ha publicado el uso de nuevos fármacos biológicos como
una nueva opción terapéutica en la alopecia areata.Son fármacos inmunosupresores selectivos,con
amplia experiencia en enfermedades inmunológicas como la artritis reumatoide, enfermedad de
Crohn y, recientemente,psoriasis.
Los fármacos autorizados en España son infliximab,etanercept, adalimumab y ustekinumab.
Hay fármacos que actúan dirigidos contra el factor de necrosis tumoral-alfa (TNF-α) que desenca-
dena la inflamación. Otros más modernos, como el ustekinumab se fijan a ciertas proteínas de los
linfocitos.
La alopecia areata al ser una enfermedad autoinmune podría, en teoría, beneficiarse de los fárma-
cos biológicos.
Existen casos publicados de respuesta favorable a etanercept, infliximab y adalimumab; sin
embargo, los casos más numerosos recogen falta de eficacia,e incluso,casos de recidivas de alope-
cia areata en pacientes en tratamiento biológico por otra indicación que no fuera alopecia areata.
Incluso hay un caso de alopecia areata coincidiendo con el tratamiento de un paciente psoriásico
con ustekinumab.
Se necesitarían más estudios para comprobar el mecanismo de acción de los fármacos biológicos
en la alopecia areata.

ALOPECIA AREATA AND BIOLOGICAL TREATMENTS
Abstract: In the last few years, it has been published the use of biological drug as, as a new option
in the treatment of alopecia areata.They are selective immunosupressor drugs,with a wide experience
in immunological diseases,such as,rheumatoid arthritis,Crohn´s disease and,recently,psoriasis.
In Spain,approved drugs are infliximab,etanercept,adalimumab y ustekinumab.
There are some drugs directed against tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha that achieves to inflamma-
tory process.Other newer drugs,as ustekinumab,are connected to certain proteins of lymphocytes.
Supposedly,alopecia areata,as autoimmune disease,could improve with the use of biological drugs.
It is published a favourable response to infliximab, etanercept and adalimumab. Nevertheless, the
most frequent cases collect the lack of effectiveness, indeed, recurrences of alopecia areata patients in
biological treatments for another indication not alopecia areata are relative common.There is a recent
case of alopecia areata during the treatment of a psoriatic patient with ustekinumab.
More studies to demonstrate the action’s mechanism of biological drugs in alopecia areata will be nec-
essaries.
